Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect in sales tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi on Saturday sent a suspect, Muhammad Altaf Hussain, owner of M/s Tuba International, to the Customs Department on physical remand for six days. The suspect was booked in a sales tax evasion case of Rs 15 million.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and informed that owner of M/s Tuba International and others are involved in sales tax evasion and during investigation the prosecution collected evidences. However, he said the prosecution needs further investigation and arrest of other suspects, therefore, the court might grant his physical remand and send him back to the Customs Department.

After the hearing, the court sent back him to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report. Court also directed investigation officer to arrest absconders who are involved in same crime.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section as commission of tax fraud as envisaged under section 2 (37) of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.
