Customs Court approves remand of suspect booked in air conditioners smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Ghulam Muhammad son of Muhammad Usman and sent him back to customs department, who was alleged involved in smuggling of betel nuts, portable air conditioners, polyester grey fabric, new tyres of FROMVAY etc.

On July 19, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive produced above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on actionable information, customs team intercepted a Hino bus namely Al-Mahmood Coach bearing registration no: BSA-014 being driven by the above named arrested persons.

He further informed the court that during the search, customs officials found 338 poly propylene bags containing betel nuts 6760 kg valuing of Rs3,380,000, 46 portable air conditioners (old & used) each having 9000 BTU capacity worth Rs1,003,915, foreign origin polyester grey fabric 124 thans weighing 744 kilograms measuring 13392 yards worth Rs626,913. 05 PP bundles assorted polyester suiting/ shirting fabric containing 90 rolls weighing 325 kg measuring 3243 yards worth Rs273,853. 7 new tyres of FROMVAY brand, made in China worth Rs165,155, 09 (old & used) small bicycle worth Rs45,000.

Investigation officer said that during the search, drive was asked to produce lawful documents of goods, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods were seized and he also was taken into custody and first information report was registered. He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation from him for arrest of financiers, abettors & other including owner of the bus & goods, therefore, court may send him back to customs department.

After the hearing, court sent him back to customs luck-up and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.
