Customs Court approves remand of suspect involved in betel nuts smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Muhammad Dawood to customs department on physical remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle betel nuts, cigarettes, gutkha and other contraband goods.

On October 29, 2018, investigation officer produced above mentioned accused and informed the court that on a actionable information, a team of MCC Preventive raided Railway Wagon and found 4275 kg betel nuts, 150 dandas L&M Cigarettes, 450 dandas Davidoff Light Cigarettes (Genova), 100 dandas Benson Hedges Cigarettes (London), 450 dandas MOND Super Slim Filter Cigarettes, Green Apple & Cherry, 15 kg Safina Brand Gutkha, 120 kg One-2-One Gutkha total valuing of Rs. 5,666,250.

He argued that prosecution needs further investigation from said accused for arrest of other absconding suspects, therefore, court may send him to customs department.

After the hearing, court sent him to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

Case was registered violation of section 2 (s) 156(2) and 178 of customs act, 1969 and other related laws.
