KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Mushtaq Hussain Leghari son of Muhammad Hassan to Central Jail on judicial remand who was booked in a case of attempting to fraudulent clearance of restricted betel nuts in the garb of mixed used cloths for processing at Karachi Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), Karachi.
On January 10, 2019, investigation officer produced the above named suspect before the court and informed that the said accused was arrested on January 7 for his involvement in the crime being facility division of export promotion zones, authority, Karachi, he was presented before on January 8 and was remanded for two days.
He submitted that in the light of investigations from suspect some more officials/ officers are to be investigated for which custody of the suspect so he may kindly be further remanded in the customs custody for 10 days.
However, after the hearing, court sent him to jail on judicial remand and directed jail authorities to produce him on next date of hearing before the court.
It needs to be mentioned here that on November 30, 2018, counsel for the accused Muhammad Akif argued that there is no specific allegation leveled against his client and counsel for other two suspects argued that name of his clients are not mentioned in the FIR and they have been arrested without any involvement/ evidence.
Ashif Ali Anwar Rana, special prosecutor of the state has opposed these bail applications. After their arguments, court announced order that “at this stage the bail applications cannot be entertained, hence these are dismissed.
According to the FIR, owners/ partners/ directors of M/s Hands Industries Private Limited imported a consignment and declared it as 19000 kilograms mixed used cloths valuing of Rs840,787, however, during the examination, customs team found 26985 kg betel nuts valuing of Rs4,986,828 and evaded the duties and taxes in the tune of Rs6,240,716.
