Customs Court sentences woman smuggler to five year imprisonment, Rs 180m fine

LAHORE: The Special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has sentenced a suspect, Rahat Shehzadi, to five years imprisonment in a case pertaining to the smuggling of Rs 20 million.

The Customs Court has also imposed a penalty of Rs 180 million and bound her to pay the money within the specific time. In case of failure, she will have to spend six more months in jail.

Earlier, the verdict on the case was adjourned from February 12 to February 23 and then it was rescheduled for March 18.

As per details available to Customs Today, a case was registered against Rahat Shahzadi. She was intercepted by Customs authorities at the Lahore airport when she was attempting to smuggle Rs 20 million of foreign and local currency to Dubai in 2013.

Now the Customs investigation and prosecution had completed the interim challan against the suspect which was submitted before the court.

The Customs Court has also recorded the statements of witnesses and completed the judicial trial of the suspect and concluded the hearing of the case. The verdict was announced on Friday and the culprit has been sent to jail for five years.
