Customs Court awards jail term to suspects in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court awarded one-month imprisonment and fine of Rs100,000 with benefit of section 282-B to suspects namely Ghulam Sarwar son of Muhammad Ramzan, Rasool Bakhsh son of Imam Bakhsh and Sher Muhammad son of Usman, who were nominated in first information report (FIR)

If the fine amount is not paid the accused persons shall suffer simple imprisonment for six months further, the court mentioned in its verdict.

According to the prosecution, dated Oct 19, 2020 on a credible information, customs officials intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number TKB-607, containing smuggled non duty paid betel nuts concealed under the cover loaded of gravel/ crushed stones loaded on the said dumper truck which was arrived from Duriji Balochistan.

As per first information report, the driver along with co-driver were asked about any concealment in the said dumper truck to which they showed their ignorance and stated that they are carrying gravel/ crushed stone, the driver of the said dumper truck was asked about the documents of dumper truck and loaded crushed stones, but he failed to produce the same.

During the search of dumper, found 8010 kilograms betel nuts under the cover of loaded of crush stones, upon recovery of betel nuts from Hino Dumper truck the occupants were asked to produce lawful documents of the concealed betel nuts but they failed to produce any documents, therefore, they were arrested and case was registered against them. FIR mentioned.
