Customs Court awards jail to three smugglers

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded 22 days imprisonment along with Rs 200,000 fine to two suspects, Aslam Mengrani and Muhammad Jawaid, and one day imprisonment along with Rs 200,000 fine to Muhammad Idress alias Cheena after they were found guilty of smuggling mobiles phones, tablets, laptops, I-pads Apple and others contraband/ restricted goods.

During the hearing, all the three accused were produced before the court those who filed applications for pleading guilty and voluntarily placed themselves on the mercy of the court.

After the confession of the convicts, the Special judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi counted 22 days from when the suspects namely Aslam Mengrani and Muhammad Jawaid were arrested as their imprisonment.

It needs to be mentioned here that third accused namely as Muhammad Idress alias Cheena was arrested on August 2, 2016 and a day after was produced before the court.

According to the FIR, on July 13,2016 at 14:30 hours Customs Preventive officer Muhammad Huq Nawaz intercepted accused Aslam Mengrani and Muhammad Jawaid at international arrival Hall, Jinnah International Airport, Karachi and recovered mobile phones assorted brands, tablets PC Samsung, laptops old & used, mobile watches Samsung Gear S2, camera assorted, memory cards assorted, USB, Sony active glasses ,Sony mobile projector, MAC Books assorted Apple, I-pads and empty mobile boxes.

After the legal formalities, accused persons were arrested and FIR was lodged under offence punishable under Section 156 (1) (8) (89) of the Customs Act, 1969.
