Customs Court convicts two on cell phones, laptop smuggling

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 46 days imprisonment along with Rs 50,000 fine each to Sheikh Muhammad Sohail and Umair Munawar Rana after they were found guilty of smuggling of mobile phones, laptops etc.

During the hearing, Sheikh Muhammad Sohail and Umair Munawar Rana along with their counsel appeared before the court and filed applications for pleading guilty and voluntarily place themselves at the mercy of the court.

After the confession by the convicts, the special judge counted 46 days from when accused persons were arrested as their imprisonment.

Both accused were arrested dated December 30, 2015 and were released on bail dated February 15, 2016.

According to the prosecution, on credible information, officials of the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation intercepted the convicts and recovered 183 mobile phones and laptops including Samsung, Apple iPhone, Huawei media pad and others which were brought out of customs area without payment of duty/taxes.

Case was registered as under Section 2 (s) of 16 punishable under clauses (8) of 89 of sub-section (1) read with sub-section (2 ) of Section 156 of the Customs Act, 1969 read with SRO 566 (1)/2005.
