Customs Court grants bail to suspects booked in smuggling of betel nuts, Indian tablets

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted bail to seven suspects booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts, Indian tablets etc.

On January 3, 2018, counsel for the suspects submitted bail petition on behalf of accused namely Abdul Sattar, Ahmed, Ahmed Ullah, Daro Khan, Abdul Bari and Abdul Baqi and argued that their clients are innocent and were falsely implicated in this case.

After the hearing, the court granted them bail against the surety of Rs20,000 and directed them to appear on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted three non-duty paid Toyota Surf jeeps bearing registration no: BF-0150, FB 1429 and BF-2096 and during the search, customs team found 147 PP bags containing betel nuts 3381 kilograms worth Rs899,346,47,  boxes containing 2350 strips of relief tablets (Indian origin) 23500 tablets and 1 carton containing Penegra tablets (Indian origin) 7520 tablets.

Investigation officer argued that no documents regarding the lawful import/purchase/ procurement/transportation of the recovered goods were produced by anyone, therefore, all suspects were taken into custody and case was registered.
