Customs Court seeks final charge-sheet of betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer to complete investigations and submit final charge-sheet in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts and other contraband goods.

On October 04, 2018, investigation officer sought further time for arrest of absconding owners and file charge-sheet, therefore, court granted time and adjourned that matter.

Earlier, Investigation Officer Tariq Mahmood submitted first information report before the court and informed that an actionable information was received to the effect that a considerable quantity of smuggled/contraband non-duty paid foreign-origin goods betel nuts, gutka and cigarettes were dumped/concealed at storage places in the premises at 11/63, Jodia Bazar, Karachi and likely to be removed from that said premises shortly.

He submitted that pursuant to said information a team reached at the spot with law enforcement agencies as precautionary measures to avoid any law & other situation but no one came near the dumping place in presence of customs team with the danger of their apprehension.

He further informed the court that during the search, they found 108 PP bags each containing 5400 packets and further each packet containing 90 pouches of Shikhar brand Indian-origin gutka total 486000 pouches valuing to Rs7,290,000. 25 PP bags each weighing 80 kilogram containing betel nuts total weighing 2000 kilogram valuing to Rs492,000. 03 bundles containing 143 cartons/ dandas of Bensons & Hedhes (Blue Gold) cigarettes made in London valuing to Rs114,400. 2 bundles of foreign origin polyester fabric Georgette (ladies cloths) 2640 yards 132 kg valuing to Rs81180. 02 roles of foreign origin curtain cloths 154 yards 66 kg valuing to Rs40,590 while total value of said goods are Rs8,018,170.
