Customs court sends suspect to jail booked in foreign currency smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court has sent suspect namely Sami Ullah Shaikh, son of Shamuddin, to Central Jail Karachi on judicial remand. The accused was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth millions of rupees during a raid at Jinnah International Airport Karachi.

On Thursday, investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and submitted that customs staff on suspicion intercepted the suspect at the departure of airport and asked him to provide travel documents. After collecting the documents, the staff thoroughly checked his luggage and during the search of his luggage, customs officials found $650, 78,755 UAE dirhams hidden as wrapped in the cloths of the passenger.

Investigation officer further informed the court that suspect was traveling to Dubai through Flydubai Airline and after formalities customs officials seized said foreign currency and arrested the same.

He submitted that the prosecution has completed the investigation and no further need for his custody, therefore, court may send him to jail, after hearing, court sent him to jail and directed jail authorities to produce him on next date of hearing.
