PESHAWAR: Customs officials Monday foiled an attempt of smuggling mobile phone equipment and accessories.
According to the Model Customs Collectorate, Peshawar, the officials at Torkham in Khyber Agency foiled the bid of smuggling non-type approved cellular equipment and accessories after maintaining vigilance around-the-clock and seized nearly 1,000 items worth million of rupees.
It is pertinent to mention that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has banned non-type approved equipment, which poses a threat to national security. Under the Telecom Act 1996 (section 29), no terminal equipment can be directly or indirectly connected with PSTN unless it has been type approved by PTA. Type approval granted by the PTA signifies that particular telecommunication equipment is approved for general sale and is suitable to connect with a specific public telecommunication network.
