Customs Intelligence impounds 404 vehicles worth Rs 812.5m in 21 weeks

ISLAMABAD: The Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has impound 404 non-duty paid vehicles and other vehicles being used for smuggling worth Rs 812.59 million during first 21 weeks (July to December 7) of current fiscal year 2016-17.

During the same period of last financial year 2015-16, the directorate impound 380 vehicles. The current figures show that the department marked better performance than the same period of last year.

In country wide action against non duty paid vehicles during July to December 7, the Customs Intelligence impounded 225 non-duty paid vehicles worth Rs 572.55 million under Section 16 of the Customs Act, 1969 and 179 vehicles worth Rs 240.035 million under Section 157.

During the same period of last year, the directorate impounded 164 non-duty paid cars valued at Rs 223 million and 216 vehicles worth 326.28 million under Section 157 of the act.

Customs Intelligence Headquarters Deputy Director Khaldun ul Haq told Customs Today that auction of impounded non-duty paid and smuggled cars was expected to be held at the end of this month. He said that country wide operations against smuggling will be beefed up when the new security staff will join the office on completion of two month FC training next week.

“We are also improving the computerised system and making better relationship with other state agencies. It is clear directions of our Director General Shaukat Ali to all officers and staff for using all the possible ways to curb the menace of smuggling.”
