Customs seizes Indian origin tomatoes near Abbottabad

PESHAWAR: The staff of Customs mobile squad Abbottabad impounded truck loaded with Indian origin tomatoes near Sabzi Mandi Main Sinkari Road.

Sources told Customs Today customs mobile squad have arrested the driver who failed to produce any proof about the tomatoes and also impounded the truck bearing number NWFP -Z-5841- Peshawar. The owner of goods who was identified as Zaheer Hussain was asked about the origin of the said tomatoes on which he answered that the truck been loaded near Indian border with Kashmir; hence were proved to be Indian origin.

Hence the truck loaded with smuggled goods was brought to office of customs mobile squad at Mirpur Abbottabad and seized in terms of Section 168 of the Customs Act 1969 for violation of sec 2 (s) and section 16 read with section 3 (1) of Imports Exports Control Act 1950 for panel action under Section 156 (1) (5) (9) (89) and (90) of Customs Act 1969 Section 3 (3) of the Imports and Exports (Control) Act 1950 and Section 157 of the Customs Act 1969 with all enabling provisions applicable.

The fresh tomatoes have total weight of 9000 kg and were loaded in 360 crates. The sources informed that the Assistant Collector Customs Asma Paracha lauded the Customs mobile squad and have said that no effort will be spared to stop the smuggling of Indian origin vegetables via Azad Kashmir to different parts of Pakistan. The assistant Collector have said to eliminate smuggling of Indian origin vegetables in order to encourage the trade of vegetables in the country.

The Assistant Collector earlier was posted at Customs House Peshawar fully committed to eradicate the smuggling of Non customs paid goods through the region.
