ISLAMABAD: The Model Customs Collectorate will focus on anti-smuggling campaign and collection of duty/taxes during the new fiscal year 2016-17 by following a line of action given by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
This was said by Islamabad Customs Deputy Collector Shahid Jan while talking to Customs Today in an exclusive interview. He said that the customs will also follow the policies and vision of FBR Chairman Nisar Muhamamd Khan to achieve the targets.
The department will focus on anti-smuggling campaign and collection of duty/taxes in order to surpass the targets, he said, adding that, confidence level increased among customs staff after outstanding performance of the collectorate in year 2015-16 when it surpassed the assigned targets with reasonable margin.
He said, “The customs department is definitely a revenue generating agency but customs staff also serves the people to save them from unlawful practices .i.e. smuggling, drugs trafficking, under-invoicing and many others”.
The department has brightened future aspects, and official-level decision making process is surprisingly fast with in custom department, he said.
Rising from Pakhtoon family, Shahid Jan is the first person of his family who joined public service sector and he is serving for last 15 years with devotion.
His supporting staff said that the deputy collector has a nice attitude and always treated his lower staff with patience and humble manners.
Shahid Jan said that the Islamabad Customs showed better performance during January-June of fiscal year 2015-16, as compare to last fiscal year 2014-15, in revenue collection, impounding non-duty paid vehicles and goods.
The collectorate seized miscellaneous smuggled goods worth Rs 97.708 million, impounded 105 vehicles being used for transportation of smuggled items worth Rs 144.148 million and 23 non-duty paid vehicles worth Rs 48.655 million during January to June 2016, he informed.
During same period of fiscal year 2014-15, the ASO seized miscellaneous goods worth Rs 38.4 million, 45 vehicles worth Rs 63.877 million and 31 non-duty paid vehicles worth Rs 39.877 million, he added.
He also attended mid career management training course at National Institute of Management Peshawar from January 2016. The deputy collector said that it was a good experience of his carrier to get Knowledge and understanding about team work and all issues faced while performing duties.
Shahid Jan is serving as deputy collector at Islamabad Customs Administration of headquarters, anti-smuggling and investigation. Previously, he performed duties from November 2015 to January 2016 at airport as deputy collector. He looked after accompanied baggage, export through Benazir Bhutto International Airport, international mail office and bonds section.
He also served as deputy director at Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, Islamabad where he supervised anti-money laundering.
Shahid Jan also performed his duties at FBR HQ as Preferential Trade secretary and also performed at international fora under the umbrella of Ministry of Commerce, including second phase of Pak-China FTA negotiations, joint secretary level meeting at New Delhi (India), 8th round of negotiations on preferential trade agreement PTA at Jakarta (Indonesia), D-8 Professional Trade Agreement negotiation (Istanbul), First meeting of joint working group at Tehran, and PTA negotiations at Islamabad.
