Denmark to provide $90m aid to help Afghanistan economy

KABUL: Foreign Minister of Denmark, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, said that Denmark will provide $90 million annual aid to Afghanistan till 2017 to enhance Afghan economy.

The commitment was made last week by the Foreign Minister of Denmark, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, who met with his Afghan counterpart Zarar Ahmad Osmani.

He said, “The security and stability in Afghanistan is of importance for the government and people of Denmark; therefore, the people and government of Denmark welcome the agreement of Afghan leaders for establishing the government of National Unity. I hope the government of National Unity utilize the existed potentials in Afghanistan and put utmost efforts to ensure everlasting security and stability, as well as fight against corruption, education development and strengthening the role of women in Afghanistan”.

In the meantime, Osmani said, “The Kingdom of Denmark have made significant and invaluable contributions in the last 13 years with Afghanistan in various spheres, as well as the presence of Danish soldiers within ISAF mission has greatly helped the Afghani government in providing security, stability and progress in the country. During this mission 43 Danish solider have lost their life and 211 wounded,” Osmani said.

“Denmark has assisted US $ 150 million for the Afghan Education, which put this country in list of top contributing nations and has demonstrated a good model in this sphere,” Osmani added.

Osmani and his Danish counterpart Lidegaard called terrorism as serious threats against the security of region and the world, and emphasized on the continuation of joint cooperation against the menace of this phenomenon.
