LAHORE: On the one hand the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has slapped heavy token tax and registration fee on cars, but on the other hand it has so far not been able to bring heavy construction machinery into the motor vehicle tax net.

Construction companies do not pay taxes in spite of using heavy machinery such as dumper trucks, cranes, bulldozers, motor graders and excavators. Interestingly, the heavy machinery they use is not registered with the Excise and Taxation Department.

In 2013, the Punjab government had decided to bring these construction to the motor vehicle tax net. Former Excise and Taxation Department director general Naseem Sadiq had issued a notice to the construction companies, but no serious steps have been taken to receive taxes from the construction companies.

A source said the department could earn more than Rs 220 million by slapping taxes on these construction companies.
