FBR, SEPCO summoned for levying extra sales tax on electricity bills

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to Revenue Division secretary/ FBR chairman, Regional Tax Office (RTO) chief commissioner and Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) directing them to file their respective comments in a case regarding the imposition of extra sales tax on electricity bills.

A single judge comprising Justice Munib Akhter was hearing the application of M/S Al-Ghazi Alamghir Flour Mills.

Earlier, the counsel for the petitioner stated that petitioner was running a manufacturing mill located at Daowala Mureed Shakh, Ubauro. According to the petitioner, the products of flour are exempted under Section 13 read with item No 19 of the sixth schedule of Sales Tax Act, 1990; however, respondents issued a notification SRO 509 (1) 2013 on June 12, 2013.

“The respondents also charged extra tax at the rate of 5 percent of total bill amount from persons having industrial or commercial connections and whose bill is exceeds Rs 15,000,” the petitioner added.

The petitioner requested the SHC to direct the respondents not to levy and charge extra sales tax at the rate of 5 percent on electricity bills.
