Federal govt proposes major increase in GB development budget

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has proposed a significant increase in the development budget for Gilgit-Baltistan for the fiscal year 2026-27.

According to budget documents, a 27.32% increase has been proposed in the federal development allocation for Gilgit-Baltistan compared with the revised development budget for the current fiscal year. The proposed allocation also represents a 5.26% increase over the original development budget for the outgoing fiscal year.

The documents show that more than Rs39 billion has been proposed for Gilgit-Baltistan’s development budget in the next fiscal year, compared with the revised allocation of Rs30.67 billion for the current year.

The region was originally allocated Rs37.10 billion in development funds for the ongoing fiscal year. For 2026-27, Rs23 billion has been proposed under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) and block allocation.

The government has also proposed Rs4 billion under the Prime Minister’s Special Package for Gilgit-Baltistan.

In addition, Rs2.20 billion has been earmarked for the construction of the 16-megawatt Naltar Hydropower Project, while Rs1.71 billion has been proposed for solar power projects at various sites across the region.

The budget also includes Rs1 billion for the establishment of a regional grid in Gilgit-Baltistan, along with funding for drainage, road infrastructure, water supply schemes and hospital construction projects.
