First environment friendly coal terminal starts functioning at Port Qasim

KARACHI: Pakistan’s first environment friendly coal terminal at Port Muhammad bin Qasim has started working.

According to the details, Pakistan International Bulk Terminal (PIBT) will handle coal, clinker and cement. It has kicked off its operation by handling a ship with 41,000 ton coal.

The ship was MV African Funfit with 200 meter length, 32 meter wide and 12.5 meter deeper berthed with 61,219 Dead Weight Ton (DWT). Other two ships one with 63,454 Dead Weight Ton and other with 39550 Dead Weight Ton also berthed on PIBT.

The terminal took only two days to handle a ship, the same ship used to take seven days. PIBT reduced the time by using modern technology of handling coal, clinker and cement.

The terminal has been built with cost of $285 million it has modern jetty, two cranes to load unload coal ship, one each for cement and clinker. It has capacity to handle 12 million ton cargo and 62 hector place for storage.
