WARSAW: Finnish power group Fortum will build a €200 million heat and power facility in Zabrze, in southern Poland able to run on RDF, coal and biomass. “The facility will be fuelled with about 200,000 tonnes of refused-derived fuel and a slightly lower amount of coal”, said Fortum senior vice president Markus Rauramo.
The quantity of biomass it will burn will depend on the market situation.Fortum wants the plant to be “as flexible as possible”, Mr Rauramo added, noting a recent trend towards building multifuel plants of similar scale in both the UK and Lithuania. It will supply 145MWth and 75MWe, or a total of 730GWh of heat and 550GWh of electricity over the course of a year.It will supply district heat to around 70,000 households in Zabrze and the neighbouring city of Bytom, replacing Fortum’s two ageing coal-fired CHP units there.
