KARACHI: The Special Custom and Taxation Court on Wednesday deferred the pronouncement of judgment until September 17 in a case pertaining to fraudulently import of a luxurious vehicle under personal baggage scheme.
Earlier, Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi had reserved the verdict after hearing arguments from the prosecution and defence sides and set August 19 for announcement of the judgment.
According to the prosecution, in 2006 Karachi Customs had foiled a bid of import of vehicle on a passport which was tampered with Sheikh Abid Ali. A clearing agent had produced the documents, including passport of Hakim Ali, importer of the vehicle. On scrutiny of the documents, it was found that the importer had already availed the scheme under which he had imported a vehicle. Hence, the passport was tampered with and the relevant page was removed from it to import another vehicle.
Subsequently, an FIR was registered against Hakim Ali, Sheikh Abid Ali, and Naveed Yamin under the relevant sections of the Customs Act 1969. Hakim Ali is still at large whereas two accused were out bail.
