Government imposes tax on utility bills

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has reportedly imposed tax on utility bills.

According to sources, the Federal Board of Revenue has imposed tax on electricity and telephone bills.

They said that 7.5 percent withholding tax had been imposed on household consumers whose electricity bill is Rs 75,000 or more. Moreover, commercial and industrial consumers whose electricity bill is Rs 400 or less are exempted from tax, while commercial customers having electricity bill from Rs 400 to Rs 600 will pay Rs 80 tax; and customers having bill from Rs 600 to 800 will pay Rs 100 as tax.

Furthermore, customers having electricity bill from Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 will pay Rs 160 tax; those having electricity bill from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 will pay Rs 300 tax; and customers having electricity bill from Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,000 will pay Rs 450 as tax.

According to sources, 10 percent tax rate has been imposed on commercial bills more than Rs 20,000, while 5 percent tax rate has imposed on industrial bills.

On the other hand, customers having telephone bill of Rs 1,000 are exempted from the tax, but Rs 10% WHT has been imposed on telephone bills more than Rs 1,000. Moreover, 5 percent tax has been imposed on airlines tickets for national flights.

It is important to mention here that 14% WHT tax has been imposed on the Internet as well as mobile cards.
