Gujranwala customs facing shortage of staff to curb smuggling

SIALKOT: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation department Gujranwala division office is facing shortage of young staff as no recruitment has been carried out in the department since long.

Office Superintendent Muhammad Sajjad Rubanni told Customs Today, that the department needed more staff for the operational activities to curb smuggling in the whole division and to perform administrative work.“Inclusion of fresh blood in Customs Intelligence and Investigation department will enhance the performance of the department during anti-smuggling crackdown in the widespread area,” he believed.

The office superintendent said that some members of existing staff are too old to chase the smugglers. He revealed that the Gujranwala office has just 17 members staff that has to cover the whole GT Road in Punjab from KPK to Rawalpindi.

Sajjad  Rubbani said that to curtail smuggling in the region from Balochistan, KPK, AJK, Gilgit Baltistan, Rawalpind etc.  Gujranwala Customs Intelligence and Investigation office needed more staff. He informed this scribe that his four staff members are also retiring soon.

However, all efforts have been done to curb smuggling in the division and recruitment will increase the performance as well as capability of department, he added. He said that the shortage of staff is already in the notice of Federal Board Of Revenue (FBR) and Director General Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department. He said that it very important issue that the Assistant Director Ms. Zainab Mehmood is performing duty at Lahore and she visit Gujranwala one or twice in a month.
