Gujranwala Customs Intelligence plans joint crackdown on smugglers

SIALKOT: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation, Gujranwala has made a plan to launch a joint crackdown against non-duty paid vehicles on October 3, 2016 with the assistance of Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO), Excise and Taxation, Punjab Police and Motorway Police, it is learnt.

Sources said that the officials from all departments, including Custom Intelligence Superintendent Muhammad Rauf Farooqi, Sialkot Customs Assistant Collector Fahad Bashir Chaudhary, Excise and Taxation Officer Mohammad Saleem Malik, District Transport Authority Secretary Babar Hayat, Traffic Police Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Butt, Punjab Highways Deputy Superintendent Rana Nadeem Tariq and others attended a meeting to discuss the issue of smuggled vehicles

In the meeting, all officials agreed to launch a campaign in the region against smuggling and elements involved in the illegal business in order to save the national exchequer, the sources said.

All departments will work together to impound the vehicles on roads. The officials of excise will adopt process of general hold up and impound non-registered vehicles, while the Customs Intelligence and ASO will check the documents regarding customs clearance and payment of duty/taxes. However, the police will provide security and protection to the officials of the said departments.
