MUMBAI: The air intelligence unit (AIU) of the airport customs on Wednesday arrested a couple for smuggling gold worth Rs60.88 lakh. The couple has been identified as Mohamed Hassain and his wife Djany Mohamed Safraby, both were holding French passports and had arrived to Mumbai from Dubai via Bahrain. The AIU had recovered one gold bar of 1kg, five gold bars of 100gms each, two crude gold chain weighing 700gms, 5 crude gold bangles weighing 300 gms, one necklace 94gms and gold chain and two rings 12gms.
Thus, total gold weighing at 2606 gms valued at Rs60.88 lakh was seized from them. Gold bars were concealed in the ladies hand bag and rest of gold was recovered from them in person. In addition, 10 cartons of Marlboro cigarettes valued at Rs11,424 were also recovered from their checked in bag. All the goods were seized and both the passengers arrested. Both person were of Indian origin.
This case has been detected after Tuesday’s big case where 5.7 kg of gold was seized from two passengers by AIU. The gold, in this case, was concealed in various items i.e., watch dial, pen refills, bra hooks, foils, etc. totally valued at Rs1,33,84,762. Both had arrived from Dubai.
