Attorney General’s Office spokesman Setia Untung Arimuladi says Muhammad Abdul Hafeez was shot dead by a firing squad early Sunday in Banten province, west of Jakarta.

The 44-year-old Hafeez was arrested in June 2001 upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta airport after customs officers found 1,050 grams of heroin hidden in snack packages he was carrying.

He was sentenced to death the same year. Arimuladi said the execution was carried out after Hafeez’s second request for judicial review was rejected by the Supreme Court.

More than 140 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug crimes. About a third of them are foreigners.
