IR Intelligence team raids two malls in Rawalpindi over tax fraud

ISLAMABAD: A team of officials from the tax authority’s Intelligence Wing has raided two known shopping malls in Rawalpindi over the tax fraud.

The Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation Inland Revenue (IR) Islamabad, during the raid, unearthed multiple sales tax evasions through several undeclared and Benami bank accounts.

The team, headed by Deputy Director Muhammad Junaid Murtaza and Assistant Director Mehdi Hassan, raided the outlets and warehouses of cloth retailers in Saddar and commercial market area of Rawalpindi. The owners of Al Jannat Mall and Pechaan Mall got multiple registrations in sales tax to suppress sales.

The team also impounded servers, computers, cheque books and other sales related records. Initial scrutiny of impounded record reveals that they are involved in sales tax evasion amounting to millions of rupees. The Directorate has started criminal proceedings against the owners of malls.
