KINGSTON: A stash of counterfeit cigarettes valued at over $65 million was seized a short time ago during an operation in an upper St Andrew community.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime division (C-TOC), which led the operations, says 154 boxes each containing 50 cartons of Craven A and Newport cigarettes were found in a room in the residential community.
“The items were found in a four-by-four room which was stacked from ground to ceiling,” Senior Superintendent Clifford Chambers, who is attached to C-TOC, told The Gleaner.
Chambers revealed that no one was arrested in connection with the seizure, but indicated that investigators have identified an Asian man as a person of interest.
He said investigators believe the cigarettes are part of a large counterfeit ring.
“We are following other leads as it relates to other locations where some of these items are and we hope we will also be successful in locating those,” he told The Gleaner.
