Jhang ASO impounds iron scrap, truck worth Rs 2.8m

FAISALABAD: The Customs Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO), Jhang, has seized foreign origin illegally imported iron and steel scrap valued at Rs 2.28 million, besides impounding carrier vehicle worth Rs 600,000 during an action.

Following information received through Collector Zulfiqar Ali, the ASO staff intercepted a Hino Truck bearing Registration No TKM- 421 near Faisalabad Bypass Road, Jhang loaded with 30,520 kilogrammes (kg) of iron and steel scrap.

On the spot, Customs Superintendent Saeed Akhtar Joiya asked the driver named Lal Miraj son of Muhammad Akbar Khan to produce documents regarding legal import or lawful possession of the goods. The driver provided Goods Declaration No. 107 dated August 9, 2016 showing description as iron and steel waste scrap having weight declared as 24,000kg.

Therefore, the officials impounded the truck along with items under Section 168, on violation of Section 16, 18, and 32 of the Customs Act, 1969 read with SRO No 499(1)2009.

The customs registered a case against two accused persons. The ASO team comprising Inspector Shaukat Khan, Muhammad Munir Ahmed, Sepoys Ghulam Abbas, Muhammad Ajmal, Ahmed Bux and others participated in the operation. The seizure report has been sent to the Customs Adjudication authority for further legal action.
