DHAKA: A delegation of jute mill representatives today met Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh Zokey Ahad here and requested withdrawal of the ban on raw jute exports imposed by Bangladesh government.

Indian Jute Mills Association led by Chairman Manish Poddar requested Ahad “to impress upon the Bangladesh Government that ban on export of raw jute.. needs to be withdrawn in the interest of commerce between India and Bangladesh”.

IJMA said, prior to the ban a large number of contracts had been signed between Bangladesh raw jute sellers and Indian jute mills owners and traders.”

As per formal commitments, about 50,000 metric tonnes of raw jute are involved in this settled contract.

The imposition of ban will result in non-fulfilment of this contract.

This will cause immense financial hardship to the jute mills mainly in West Bengal”, IJMA stated.

Last month, the Government had said it will take up the issue of raw jute export ban imposed by Bangladesh.

The Textile Ministry had asked the Ministries of Commerce and External Affairs to take up the matter with the neighbouring country for lifting the ban on export of raw jute.
