Karachi: Regional Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) has impounded four containers loaded with smuggled goods worth Rs 51 crores from a godown located in Mauripur area on Friday. The goods included foreign origin cloth, padlocks, hardware items, stationary items, crockery, toothpaste and other miscellaneous items. The goods had been smuggled from Quetta and were destined for Karachi.
Sources told Customs Today that the operation was conducted on the basis of credible information provided by the Director General, Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) Faiz Ahmed. A team of Customs Intelligence officials, under the supervision of Director Karachi Engineer Habib Ahmed, raided the godown with the assistance of District Kemari Police and found the four suspicious containers. Further investigations are underway to identify the culprits and their network.
It is pertinent to mention here that this is not the first time that Customs Intelligence Karachi has made such a huge seizure. Earlier in February, the department had seized smuggled goods of worth Rs 110 crores. Between July 2023 and February 2024, the total value of smuggled goods seized by Customs Intelligence Karachi crossed the figure of Rs8 billion.
The Director General, Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) Faiz Chadhar, lauded the performance of the officers and staff of Customs Intelligence Karachi and urged them to continue their efforts to curb the menace of smuggling in the region. He said that smuggling was a serious threat to the national economy and security and that the department was committed to eliminate it.
