KOLKATA: Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) on Wednesday recorded the highest ever monthly container throughput of 56,996 TEUs at KOLKATA Dock System (KDS) in May 2016, compared to the previous highest of 53,160 TEUs achieved in August 2015.
Commenting on the volumes, KoPT chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said that Kolkata Port is the preferred choice for the importers and exporters due to efficient service and greater customer focus. He hoped that the strong volumes will continue in the near future and also wished that joint efforts of KoPT and Bharat Kolkata Container Terminals (BKCT) will translate into additional volume.
Incidentally, container operations at KDS are carried out through BKCT, a wholly owned subsidiary of PSA International. BKCT had, at a recent meeting, tabled a traffic and capacity study aimed at increasing the container handing capacity and productivity levels inside the port. In addition to presenting a long-term master plan, the study proposed enhancement as well as optimisations that can be implemented at relatively low cost in the immediate term.
