LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the release of former additional commissioner Inland Revenue Muhammad Iqbal in illegal assets case. An accountability court had awarded 10 years imprisonment to Muhammad Iqbal. The court suspended the accountability court order and directed authorities to release him.

According to the details, a two-member bench of the LHC headed by Justice Mehmood Maqbool Bajwa heard the case in which the counsel for appellant, Amjed Pervaiz, argued that, despite the lack of evidence, the NAB Court awarded ten years jail to his client in Rs 30 million illegal assets case.

He appealed the court to declare the order of NAB court as null and void and direct to release his client.

On the other hand, the prosecution counsel argued that the accountability court awarded ten years punishment on merit so the bail appeal should be rejected.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court suspended the punishment and released the former additional collector Inland Revenue.
