LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has rejected Rs 3.2 million additional taxes levied on each First Lady Kalsoom Nawaz and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Gen (R) Pervez Musharraf’s tenure.

The additional taxes were imposed on the Sharif family over charges of default on basic tax assessment of past four years 1994-98.

Justice Shahid Karim allowed the appeals of Kalsoom Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif challenging the additional wealth and income tax imposed on them. The Sharif family through their counsel Malik Tariq Aziz advocate argued that the Income Tax Commissioner levied the additional wealth and income tax on them.

The counsel submitted that the income tax department did not make any effort for tax assessment and declared his clients as defaulters, adding, the department cannot declare anyone defaulter without assessing taxes while the matter had already been challenged before the court.
