Malaysia Customs collects record RM35.19 billion taxes in 2014

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia Customs Department collected RM35.195 billion in revenue last year, an increase of 5.8 per cent or RM2.07 billion from 2013, said its director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad here the other day.

“This is the highest figure in the history of Customs. It almost reached our target of 98 per cent for last year’s revenue collection,” he said when speaking at the 33th World Customs Day celebration here yesterday, which was officiated by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah.

On cases of confiscation, he said a total of 5,944 cases, valued at RM726 million, were recorded last year, involving a tax of RM437 million.

The number of such cases had dropped by 16 per cent compared to the previous year following enhanced efficiency in the department from the enforcement and compliance aspects, he said.

On the Goods and Services Tax (GST), he said 306,887 companies had registered up to Jan 21 this year.

“This figure has exceed the targeted 300,000 registration, which is a success for the department, he said.

At the event, Husni launched the department’s 2015-2019 Strategic Plan to map out the directions and framework of development and modernisation management agenda of its service delivery system.
