Malaysia Customs collects RM112.6m in GST for April, May

MELAKA: The Melaka Royal Malaysian Customs Department Melaka collected RM112.6 million in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for April and May, the Melaka State Assembly was told today.

State Unity and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Lai Meng Chong said RM74 million was collected in April, the first month the tax regime implementation, while the rest of the amount in May.

He said the payment of tax for June and July had yet to be collected in full.

The state government was granted relief from the payment of the GST for procurements of supplies, except for imported cars and petroleum, he said when responding to an oral question from Lai Keun Ban (DAP-Kota Laksamana).

Lai said as the procurement of works and consulting and non-consulting services were subjected to the GST, the state government would use existing provisions to settle the dues.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said reclamation works for the Melaka Gateway project here stopped on Feb 7 after a stop-work order was issued to ensure the Social Impact Assessment was abided by besides requirements from previous studies.

“The project is part of the Pulau Kembar project that was covered in the Macro Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study.

“The Macro EIA study takes into account various facets, including social, local fishermen economic well-being, morphology, hydrology, and marine water quality,” he said when replying to an oral question from Chin Choong Seong (DAP-Kesidang).
