SEPANG: Two Indian nationals, claiming to be cloth merchants, failed to pull the wool over the eyes of customs officers who seized more than 10kg of methamphetamine from their luggage.

The drug, worth about RM1.91 million was found hidden in secret compartments of the duo’s luggage upon arrival from Chennai, South India on July 13, at the KLIA2.

KLIA customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said initial investigations revealed the suspects had entered Malaysia more than 10 times on the pretext of engaging in ‘business transactions’.

“Although the two foreigners claimed to be in the textile business, we screened their baggage which however, showed suspicious images. Upon opening their respective baggage, we found methamphetamine weighing 5.04kg and 5.02kg worth RM1.91 million, hidden in special compartments.

“We do not rule out the possibility the two men knew each other and had links to drug trafficking syndicates,” he told a press conference here the other day.

He said the duo would be investigated under 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carried the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

In a separate incident on July 5, customs enforcement officers seized a parcel couriered from Lagos, Nigeria when it was found to contain methamphetamine.

Chik Omar said the parcel was seized after attempts to contact the recipient, via a mobile phone number at an address in Klang, Selangor failed.

“In the parcel, customs officers found a vehicle exhaust pipe containing 0.470kg of methamphetamine worth RM89,300,” he added.
