JOHOR BARU: Malaysian Marine police seized 43,200 cans of illicit alcoholic beverages worth almost RM300, 000 at a warehouse near Senai here the other day.
Apparently, the beer and stout were meant for the market here during the Chinese New Year celebrations next month, said Marine Police Region Two commander Asst Comm Paul Khiu Khon Chiang here the other day.
The case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act for storing or possessing untaxed goods, he said.
“A team raided the warehouse at 7pm on Sunday after receiving information that contraband items were stored there,” he said adding that the warehouse was unlocked and the keeper could have escaped. We believe that the keeper could have escaped through a backdoor,” he told reporters in Tampoi here the other day.
He said the marine police would track the culprits.
ACP Khiu also urged the public not to buy contraband items as it was an offence to do so.
