Malaysia’s imports, exports up in June

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s exports rose 3.4% to RM66.4 billion in June from a year earlier as the nation sold more electrical and electronic (E&E) goods besides refined petroleum and timber-based items.

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said E&E exports rose 4.9% while refined petroleum product sales climbed 34.9%. Timber-based exports were 8.1% higher. The country’s imports also rose from a year earlier. The department said June imports rose 8.3% to RM60.9 billion as the country bought more intermediate, capital and consumption goods.

“Total trade in June 2016, which was valued at RM127.4 billion, expanded RM10.8 billion or 9.2% from the previous month. A growth of RM6.8 billion or 5.7% was also recorded from a year ago,” the department said.

In May, the country’s exports fell 0.9% from a year earlier while imports rose 3.1%.
