ISLAMABAD: Directorate General, Customs Intelligence and Investigation, Federal Board of Revenue, Rawalpindi, has impounded a non-duty-paid smuggled Mercedes Benz E 270 CDI motor car worth Rs12.9million. According to sources, anti-smuggling staff of the Directorate General Customs Intelligence received a tip-off that a foreign origin used non-duty-paid smuggled Mercedes car with a fake registration No: ANU-427 Sindh, Model 2004, is moving around G-11 Islamabad.
The anti-smuggling team of the Directorate General, consisting of Intelligence Officer Maqbool Ahmad, Intelligence Officer Shahid Majeed and Sepoy Shahzad Haider, rushed to the sector G-11.
The vehicle was signalled to stop by the anti-smuggling staff, but the driver of the vehicle accelerated the speed. The staff chased the Mercedes in an official vehicle. At some distance, driver parked the vehicle on roadside and fled the scene. Despite the hectic efforts of the staff, driver could not be apprehended. So the vehicle was taken into the possession in the presence of the witnesses.
No import record existed in the import data of the vehicles available with the Directorate General. And nobody appeared before the directorate office nor did anybody produce any legal documents with regard to the recovered vehicle.
The anti-smuggling staff has impounded the car being non-duty-paid and unclaimed under Section 17 of the Customs Act-1969.
