LONDON: As per studies, the mercury level is rising in Yellowfin Tuna, too.
According to the study, the rate at which mercury levels have been rising in these fish since 1998 is about 3.8% annually.
The study finds that this is because of the human-factor that’s linked to climate change. As we keep on adding more and more pollutants into the atmosphere, toxic elements such as heavy metal mercury become increasingly widespread in the ocean food chain.
According to Paul Drevnick of the University of Michigan, and the lead author of this study, “Evidence is piling up that the methyl mercury has an anthropogenic source. It’s coming from mercury emissions that are falling into the ocean”.
Burning of coal has also been pointed out as a main reason for more mercury being found in the Pacific Ocean and the species within the Pacific Ocean. Overall, the problem has increased and therefore, necessary steps are needed to be taken in order to deal with it.
