Mianwali ASO seizes smuggled items worth Rs 1.83m

FAISALABAD: The Customs Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO) Mianwali has seized smuggled computers, LCDs and other accessories worth Rs 1.837 million involving duty and taxes amounting to Rs 307,308, besides impounding carrier vehicle, Nissan trailer worth Rs 1 million.

Deputy Collector Muhammad Rizwan Khan received information regarding smuggling attempts on which he formed a team comprising Superintendent Chaudhary Sardar Muhammad, Inspector Muhammad Mansha and Muhammad Umar Bhatti, and Sepoys Muhammad Feroz, Muhammad Anwar, Said Rasool and others.

The team intercepted a container bearing Registration No MSKU-8645151, which was loaded on trailer No TLL-985 near Toll Plaza MM Road, Mianwali and recovered used computer CPU Core2 with LCD monitor, including LCD 15 inch, LCD 17 inch, LCD 19 inch and LCD 20 inch, used hard disks, DVD Rom, used laptops, computer adopter, power cable for computer, key board and mouse cleared from Karachi port vide GD No KPPI-HC-13962.

During the course of checking the driver, Muhammad Nawaz son of Muhammad Hayat produced a copy of goods declaration in his defence and informed that the importer of this consignment is Muhammad Naeem. He further said that goods were lifted from Karachi Port Qasim and then were booked from Awan Cargo Carrier Service.

The team assessed the documents and value of items from appraisement section and found short payment of Rs 307,308 in wake of duty/taxes.

Furthermore, Muhammad Naeem appeared in the office and showed willingness to pay duty and taxes along with fine and penalty according to law. He also informed, “I am innocent person and found not guilty on my part”.

The ASO team after finding some discrepancies seized the goods and the detention has been converted into proper seizure under Section 168 of the Customs Act, 1969 and forwarded the case to Customs Adjudication for further proceedings.
