MULTAN: Chief Commissioner Dr Zulqarnain Tirmizi has directed tax officials to record their day-to-day performance for further improvement in expanding tax base and tax recovery.

While talking to the state-owned news agency, Tirmizi, who recently took over the charge of RTO Multan, said that tax payment was a national obligation and RTO Multan officials were trying to ensure maximum possible recovery in a coercion-free manner.

He expressed dismay at what he called the practice of criticising tax officials and levelling corruption allegations against them whenever they try to expand tax base or increase revenue collection. He said that the whole tax collection mechanism should not be blamed adding that except a few all functionaries were performing duties honestly.

Tirmizi said that FBR gives tax collection targets of income tax, federal excise tax, and sales tax on monthly basis under a simple formula of 30 per cent increase in recovery per year. He said that performance allowance should be linked to the performance so that those performing better could be encouraged. He warned officials that those unwilling to improve would have no place in RTO Multan.

He said that corporate tax office has been set up in Multan. He said that earlier, two withholding tax offices used to operate in Multan region, however, now two range offices have been set up at Khanewal and Dera Ghazi Khan. He appealed the people to voluntarily pay their taxes honestly and contact him in case of complaint against any official.
