Multan customs seizes smuggled goods worth Rs14.936b

MULTAN: The counter-trafficking performance of the Model Customs Collectorate Multan has improved drastically as it has seized smuggled goods worth Rs 14.936 billion till the month of August of the current fiscal year against the seizure of contraband worth Rs 227 million 2010-11.

Giving an account of the past five-year performance of customs anti-smuggling squad, officials said that smuggled goods worth Rs 227 million were seized in 2010-11, Rs 141.07 million in 2011-12, Rs 142.5 million in 2012-13, Rs 262.6 million in 2013-14 and contraband items worth Rs 14.936 billion were captured in the on-going fiscal year 2014-15 till August.

Multan Customs Collector Sarfraz Ahmad Warraich when was contacted, attributed the remarkable achievement to improvement in command and control system by tightening it up further and bringing transparency besides close liaison of the higher officials with subordinate field staff and their direct supervision in filed operations.

He said that the I&I last five-year performance included 612 cases of smuggled vehicles, seizure of 178,500 litres of High Speed Iranian Diesel, 271,155 litres of oil containing grease, 100 bags of plastic granules, 72000 Indian medicines (tablets), 61,269 cigarette packets, 103,945 meters silk cloth, 61 LED TVs, 65 tyres, 2,614 bags of tea, 3,750 bullets of Air Gun, a large number of cellphones, undeclared fabric and other goods. All these cases were sent to the trial courts for prosecution, Warraich said.
