NAB hand over Rs886m embezzled amount to departments

MULTAN: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Multan handed over Rs 886 million to three different departments here on Friday after recovering it from accused who had embezzled it.

Director General NAB Multan Atiq Ur Rahman handed over Rs 879 million including Rs 114.150 million in the form of cheque and remaining in the form of documents of commercial and residential plots of Wapda town valuing Rs 765 million to Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco’s) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and president WECHS Akram Chaudhry in a ceremony, NAB spokesman said.

Another cheque worth Rs 1.224 million was handed over to Pakistan Post department’s deputy post master general Multan Shoaib Ali Jafri while Rs 55.79 million cheque handed over to Additional Commissioner (Coordination) Multan Sarfraz Ahmad.

Addressing the ceremony, DG NAB Multan appreciated the performance of NAB investigators whose untiring efforts made it possible for the NAB to recover embezzled amounts from accused and return it to the departments concerned.

He said that NAB was striving hard to root out corruption from society and also making efforts for prevention of corruption through a large scale advocacy programme targeting youth studying in universities and colleges.

Atiq Ur Rahman lauded the contribution of government departments like revenue, banks, NADRA and others for their timely assistance in tracking down the accused and level of their involvement.

The larger chunk of the Rs 886 million i.e Rs 879 million was handed over to Mepco in Wapda Employees Cooperative Housing Society (WECHS) case that was registered against WECHS former secretary Saeed Ahmad Khan and others.

Another case was registered against a clerk of GPO Liaquat Ali and others on charge of embezzlement of over Rs 1.2 million while the third case was registered against Munshi Zahid Afzal Patwari and others on charge of embezzlement of Rs 55.7 million in mutation fee and town tax fee in various Mauzas.
