LONDON: NASA has released stunning images of the cays in the Bahamas taken by an astronaut on the International Space Station 400 kilometres above Earth.
These small sandy islands on the reef are one of the most recognisable points on the planet for astronauts.
NASA has released stunning images of the cays in the Bahamas taken by an astronaut on the International Space Station 400 kilometres above Earth.
They didn’t realise it at the time, but a jet plane flying over the tropical water was also captured.
The single aircraft is so tiny it can only be seen by zooming in.
Thanks to a long lens, and the astronaut’s steady hands, not only was the white silhouette captured but the picture also shows the plane’s exhaust vapour trailing behind in two lines.
The larger island is called Great Exuma Island, which has a string of small isles stretching 14 kilometres west from it.
Small tidal changes on the banks cause water to flow through the narrow channels between the cays – first in one direction and then the other.
Nasa said Exuma is known for being remote from the bigger islands of The Bahamas, and it is rich with privately owned cays .
The area has a pirate history, including being marauded by Captain Kidd, a Scottish sailor who was executed for piracy.
