Nawaz for enhancing Pak-US economic, trade ties

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador to Pakistan David M Hale Thursday called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his first meeting after taking over as the US envoy.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan and the United States need to focus on “significantly” improving their bilateral relations, particularly in areas of economy and trade.

The prime minister said the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendera Modi was a positive development and hoped to resolve bilateral issues between India and Pakistan through dialogue.

David M Hale said the United States encourages both the countries to resolve their difference through peaceful means. Issues pertaining to bilateral relations, Afghanistan and other regional issues of mutual interests were also discussed during the meeting, a statement from the PM House said.

The US Ambassador said during his tenure in Islamabad, he would focus on following up and implementing the agenda set out in the joint press statement including in the areas of economic and trade relations. He congratulated the prime minister on successful holding of the Heart of Asia Conference in Islamabad and said the US was keen to pursue the agreements reached in the trilateral and quadrilateral meetings on Afghanistan.
