Panamagate case vs economy

A political storm has been created by leaders of various political parties after the Panama case judgment. The members of the opposition parties are finding it as a national obligation to comment on the judgment, the so-called anchors have become law experts and the business community is in a quandary what will happen to the economy in the emerging situation. The major issue of this country is trade, business and economy, but apparently it is none of the business of the political parties. The court has ordered formation of a Joint Investigation Team to take the case to its logical end, but the team has become ‘controversial’ right in the beginning. Who will bell the cat is yet to be seen, but formation of the team is a judicial order which has to be complied with in seven days. With rising of temperature, the country is once again facing the worst kind of load shedding and all the government claims that electricity will be available within three years have gone to oblivion. The present government’s tenure is nearing end and the next year is the election year, but there is no letup in the power outages.

Corruption is not the only an issue in Pakistan but also in many others. Apart from load shedding, the country is facing terrorism and mismanagement. It needs a comprehensive economic plan to absorb the investment coming from China and elsewhere. India is building dams on the rivers the water of which is meant for Pakistan and it has also spread a network of spies to create chaos in the country. The issue of corruption against prime minister is not important at this stage as the country needs continuity of economic policies. If the government changes, most of the economic gains will be lost.It is hoped that commonsense will prevail and all the political parties will take national interest supreme while launching any protest movement. The lawyers’ community is also weighing options to start a movement which will not be in the benefit of the country. At a time, debt servicing is appearing as a big issue, exports are falling and industry is under pressure, the political chaos will send wrong signals to potential investors.
