ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines can become profitable in the first year after privatization through better management, fleet expansion, and a focus on profitable routes, businessman Arif Habib said.
Renowned businessman Arif Habib said important developments are taking place regarding the future of Pakistan International Airlines after its privatization.
He said PIA can be transformed from a loss-making entity into a profitable organization in the very first year if it is run through effective management and commercial discipline.
Habib said PIA’s current fleet consists of 19 aircraft, but the number will be increased to 60 aircraft over the next five years. He said four to five aircraft will be brought back into service after repairs, while steps are already underway to make inactive aircraft operational as soon as possible.
Five new aircraft to be added
According to Arif Habib, five more new aircraft will be added to PIA’s fleet this year. He said a target has been set to add five new aircraft every year, helping the airline expand its operations and improve its financial performance.
Arif Habib said the increase in the number of aircraft will also lead to an increase in the number of employees. He made it clear that no employee will be fired for one year under the current arrangement.
Focus on profitable routes
Arif Habib said PIA will operate flights only on profitable routes after privatization. He said this strategy will help the national carrier reduce losses and move toward sustainable profitability.
A special investment will be made in PIA’s engineering facility in Karachi, Arif Habib said. He added that strengthening the engineering side will support fleet maintenance, aircraft repairs, and operational efficiency.
Share payment and senior hiring update
Arif Habib said that under the agreement, payment for 66% of shares has already been made in full. The remaining 34% payment will be completed within one year.
He also said the recruitment process for senior positions is underway and will be completed within one to one and a half months.
